Last Friday, I talked about mine and Dave's decision to make the, "all natural + organic" switch with our cleaning supplies, personal care + baby products. Since then, I've received a lot of feedback/suggestions on various products that you all use. I've looked in to everything that was recommended and I just want to say, THANK YOU to everyone who took time to offer advice. You all are the best. I'm new to this, so getting your input on skin care products and sharing your recipes with me on things like, laundry detergent, really means a lot!
Amongst some of the comments I received, were friends talking about how tricky the "all natural + organic" lifestyle can be and I gotta say, I totally agree. I couldn't tell you how many times I've bought something because the label read, "all natural" thinking it was good for me, when upon further investigation, it wasn't good for me at all! Companies make it so hard to believe them that people just get frustrated and give up and I don't blame them! Living an all natural + organic lifestyle shouldn't require extensive research on every single thing you buy, every time you buy it. That's what we've been doing for a while now and it's been really time consuming. It shouldn't be that way. It should be easy. Hassle free. But unfortunately, it's just not, which is why people shy away from it.
So how DO you know what company is telling the truth? How do you find out what's in the products you're currently using? And how and where do you even find products that are safe? Well, friends.. I'm so happy to share that the answer to all your questions is in an app called, Think Dirty. When I stumbled upon this app, I was instantly intrigued by just the name alone, so I looked it up and downloaded it (bonus- it's FREE!). What I discovered next was a total game changer.
The Think Dirty App allows you to scan and look up products to see their listed ingredients. The product is then ranked on a scale of 1-10 based on how "dirty" the ingredients are. Here's what each ranking means:
10-8 means ingredients have serious long -term health impacts.
7-4 means ingredients have moderate long-term health impacts.
0-3 means the product does not contain any known controversial or harmful ingredient
The app allows you to click on the individual ingredients, which then breaks down what the ingredient is, what it's used for and what impact(s) it makes on your health. It also includes a list of sources from which the information was derived from. You can then compare products based on their ranking and find products that are safe to use. It's that easy! As soon as I downloaded the app I started scanning all of our products, including our soap, shampoo, baby wipes, toothpaste and deodorant.
I was SHOCKED at what I found. For starters, my face moisturizer that I've been using since 2007 ranked a 9! And all my Lush products were 9's and 10's. Do you know how devastating that was for me to find out? I've been using the same face moisturizer for 8 years and love it. It feels amazing on my skin, I look forward to using it every day and now I find out that it's HORRIBLE for me?! To make matters worse, almost every single thing we owned ranked a 9 or 10. I felt disgusting and knew right then that we needed to make a change. Thankfully, the app offers alternative products with low rankings and even includes links to where the products can be bought, making it a little easier to find safe alternatives.
Transitioning our products over has been a lot easier since discovering this app. I can easily scan various products and look up their ranking right there in the grocery store aisle. The app allows me to quickly research, make a decision and then buy whatever I need. The hassle we once encountered just isn't there anymore and it's so nice. I really can't believe I hadn't heard of this app sooner, but I'm so glad I found it now, rather than later.
The only downfall to this app is that it's only available to iPhone users, but I'm hoping it will become available to other phone carriers soon. My mom tried to download it over the weekend and couldn't because she has an Android. It was a total bummer. If you have an iPhone though, I encourage you all to download this app and start scanning everything in your house, ASAP. I didn't ever think an app could change my life (and maybe that's a little dramatic to say), but this one has. Seriously.
Go download it and tell me what you think! And happy scanning!
Until Next Time,
